Ubuntu /media question

ok, I have been using linux for a while, mostly mandrake and slack, so i had a question about this: in ubuntu, there is a /media/ dir, on the root, that contains links to folders in the same directory. whats up with this?

/media is sometimes used as an alternative to /mnt, i.e. where cdroms get mounted to

must not have been clear enough then.

in the /media dir, there is a object, say floppy

so /media/floppy

but there is also a link

/media/floppy -> floppy
