I downloaded Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and burned it to a CD. I booted with it, and after a lengthy startup, it dropped me into the desktop. I looked at the menus, opened the movie player, played the example files, opened the sound control panel, adjusted my volume, closed it. Then I clicked on the icon to open the web browser.

After about 15 seconds, the system locked up hard. I rebooted, and when the CD prompted me, I ran Memtest, even though I believe my system to be solid. No errors. So I rebooted again, and tried to get back to the Ubuntu desktop. After the graphical startup screen came up, on the second step, after "Loading essential drivers <OK>" it sits for a while, then drops me to a command line that looks something like this:

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

I have rebooted and tried to get back to the Ubuntu desktop, the same thing happens. XP boots up fine from my HD like it should, which is where I'm posting this from.

Help!

PS - The only Linux commandline commands I know are ls, chdir, and man <command>, though I don't know any parameters for them. In other words, I'm a struggling newb, lol.

How much Ram do you have? How big is your Hard Drive? What processor do you have and what speed is it?

This is extremely odd, since when using a live cd it dosnt write to your hdd or cd...therefore i would think maybe you scratched the disk or something, other then that, its extremely odd. There has been a case of this found on another forum 5 years ago, it has yet to be solved.

I don't have an answer, but common a common problem. I tried out the Elive live cd, and was able to load it once, then the next time I got sent to busybox with the tty job control turned off. Despite my minimal Linux knowledge, it suggests to me that the distro itself is modifying some hardware setting at some point, which screws it when you next try to boot, would it maybe be possible to fix it by altering a bios setting?

I have the exact same problem, the disk loads to the menu screen fine, it says it loaded the kernel fine also but then I get the same error on the command line screen that has already been described. I also know next to nothing about Linux but am looking it up. As I understand it this isn't very normal, normally it installs and goes to a desktop screen before the next step. Some tech help would be GREATLY appritiated.

when you boot from the LivdCD, try to add an option "ramdisk=8129".
I found many solutions like this. But not sure whether this will work for you.

ramdisk = 8192 will probably work better.
