So you are trying to mount a new hard drive on a functional Ubuntu system? Or you are trying to install a new operating system on a new hard drive?

If you have a functioning Linux system, you'll need to create a partition on the drive and create a filesystem on it before you can mount it for use.

Gparted can do this, as well as many other options.

If you are trying to install Ubuntu, you'll need an install disk - it should be able to detect the hard drive and do the setup as long as the drive is functional.

I made a iso disk, and put it in the drive and I get a cannot find linux kernel error. It is a virgin hardrive and it has never been installed on a system.

If it won't boot from the CD then the problem is the CD, not the hard drive. Are you sure you're burning the disk correctly?

Agreed...

Its still hard to tell from the explanation, whether he's successfully installed his system, but I don't think he has.

It could be a burn issue, or it could be a problem w/ the optical drive.

I have not installed it to the system, I have been able to get to the install screen but no further. It freezes there and will not go into the load screen.

I would try the Alt. Install CD... its a text based installer, but its still not hard... Sometimes when you've got some wonky hardware that the live cd doesn't like, it will get you to an installed system. I had a dual head ATI card for a couple years, that would always give ubuntu live cd's fits.. the alt. cds worked fine however.
