ubuntu installation on ibm
 

Hey

Okay so i'm trying to install ubuntu in the following environment. i want to be able to develop for android so I need one that would be completely compatible with jdk 6. Wubi will not allow this. I setup ubuntu however there was a corrupt file in the installation and now am limited to what I can use.

Problems:
1. Stuck at black screen with blinking cursor.
2. Stuck at ubuntu login: asking for username and password.
don't know it.
3. No other partitions left. (Set everything to ubuntu and didn't leave any room for anything else. (Now what do I do?)
4. Also, booting from cd doesn't seem to work completely and neither does booting from usb.

What I need is a link to a good version of ubuntu with installer and a good partitioning tool that I can boot from usb with to create a partition. I tried gparted but it didn't give me a screen to create partitions.

I just want to install ubuntu and leave computer strictly for development.

Environment:
IBM P4
3.00 gb RAM

ubuntu liveCD (doesn't seem to install full gui version)


Please help. Been at this for a few hours and really want to get this up and running.

Which version you've installed? I think, perhaps, the installation you've done isn't correct, else you would've using it smoothly.
Whenever you install it, it asks for a username and password (which you'll be later using to login the system) as well as gives you an option to partition your system's HD.
Well, if it's not working, then better install Windows again, and then install ubuntu (better go with latest version i.e. 12.04) using USB flash drive.
Hope you know installation process using USB. But if you don't know then simply download the .iso image of Ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop, put it into your USB drive. Insert USB, power on your system, and under boot menu, select USB boot option the first option, and save the changes. Then follow the installation instruction.
