ubuntu installation from live cd - stalls at "where are you" screen

hi - i have a friend who discovered he has viruses and spyware on his xp home machine. he has no recovery discs, so i said let's install ubuntu.

i use the live cd and get to installation page. however, the computer hangs at the "where are you" screen (where you enter the time of the computer - step 2 of 6). therefore, i burned another cd (from my computer) and tried again. same problem.

when i ran "check cd" from the opening screen on his computer, i get 5 checksum errors. however, when i run "check cd" from my computer, i get 0 checksum errors.

any ideas? cd rom problem? virus on xp?

any help is appreciated. thanks!

paul

try a different romdrive on his computer and maybe burn another disc at a slower speed. that's all i can think of at the moment. what are his puter specs ie: ram, processor, etc.? an xp virus should have no affect whatsoever, i'm gearing towards his rom drive. check that and then if it don't work, we'll go from there.

thanks dogged28. i did what you mentioned and even did the textmode disk (alternate version). now it hangs @ the screen that states "retrieving libss10.9.8". any idea what is going on here? i'm using a different CD drive now. everything goes smoothly until 6% of the retrieving when i get the above message.

computer is hp513n, 256mb ram, celeron processor. should be enough.

thanks.

are you downloading the disk from the same site or a different site? i'm not sure what is the problem so i'm shooting in the dark. try wiping the drive completely and restart the install. try starting the disk in safe graphics mode. try downloading the iso from the ubuntu home site. maybe switch the memory out with two known good working sticks. maybe switch the memory first and try that if you have known good sticks, if not, google a memory tester and atleast test the memory. the live cd runs only in memory until you install it to the drive, when it hangs how long are letting it hang before you start over? if it hangs again, try just leaving it for 30 minutes too.
