Ubuntu install disk not working...

I had Ubuntu 8.10 on my old computer and really liked it. The computer was stolen so I got a new one and wanted to use Ubuntu 8.10 again. I downloaded the 64 bit version and burned the iso to a CD-RW. I used MD5 and it said the file was okay. I'm running Windows Vista, AMD Turion X2 64 bit. It's Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit version.

When I boot up my computer with the disk in, the Ubuntu screen pops up and I can choose English as my language, but when after I pick one of the options (Install, use Ubuntu, etc.), nothing seems to happen and the screen seems to freeze up. The disk drive seems to try to read the disk but then stops. I can choose boot from first disk and it will work. What's the problem?

I also tried changing the boot parameters suggested on some site by changing the "splach--" or whatever to noapic nolapic, acpi=off, irqpoll, and lapic pci=routeirq.

Just a hunch,
Sounds like you need a kernel parameter alright, but it should be directed towards video, like "which driver" to use and maybe a resolution spec..

Well, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon 3200. What would I put as the boot parameter? I only started using Linux about a week or two ago and don't know too much.

I have'nt done a Ubuntu installation in over a year I'm sure, but normally during installation you have the option to hit a "F" key to see other options where you may find examples of video options to specify.
But that does'nt sound like a troublesome card. A lot of installers tend to also go blank at this stage due to SATA optical drives.
It surely sounds like the installer gets stumped trying to find drivers for some obscure hardware.
Maybe list your hardware specs.

Like what kind of specs? HP Pavillion dv5 notebook, AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile ZM-80. I don't know what else to put.

As I recall (a couple of years ago) the Ubuntu live cds didn't always like to do installs. They also provide an alternate cd just for installing. You might try that.

could it be because i'm using the 64 bit version? I can definitely support the 64 bit, but should I just downgrade to the 32 bit?
