Ubuntu hotplug crash on bootup

I am using Ubuntu 5.10 dual boot with Windows XP Homo.

Ubuntu crashes on boot up at Hotplug stage. I have narrowed the problem down to audio hardware.

I can overcome the crashing by rebooting into Ubuntu recovery mode, typing in 'modprobe snd_hda_intel' and then reboot into Ubuntu as normal.

From there on I can reboot Ubuntu many times without problem.

BUT

If I boot into Windows (I dont even need to log in, the Windows login screen is enough), following this, If I reboot back to Ubuntu, the hotplug problem returns.

Does anybody have any knowledge of how to overcome this problem? I thought maybe the alsa-base file can be edited and the line that refers to snd_hda_intel maybe could be moved further down the list?

Or is there something I can alter in one of the init.rd files?

I hope some onw can help, as I am building this machine for someone who is willing to give Linux a try, but they wont be impressed if Linux is not working properly.

Regards,
Greenie

Update:

added 'options snd-hda-intel model=5stack-digout' to the '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base' file.

This seems to have fixed the problem. I have switched between the Windows XP and Ubuntu a couple of times now without hotplug crashing when Ubuntu boots up.

I hope this info will help others.

Regards,
Greenie

Another observation on this computer is that there is a constant hiss from the speakers which can be clearly heard at half volume. Sounds play back OK and the sound can be heard over the hiss, but when there is no sound being played back, the hiss is a little annoying.

I have booted into Windows XP to observe if there is any hiss whilst in Windows and there isnt, so I assume the problem is software related within the Ubuntu Linux environment.

Does anybody have any thoughts on how to eliminate the hiss?
