Ubuntu - GRUB install issues
 

Hi all,

New to Linux, have been wanting to play with Beryl on Linux, but having initial problems of installing Ubuntu 6.10 with GRUB.

When I run the installation from the Live CD I have been unable to use ext3, but when I choose ext2 it starts to install everything just fine.

setup:
/dev/sda1 (196GB)(extended)
/dev/sda2 (50GB) (/ or root)
/dev/sda3 (50GB) (swap)

Installation partition for GRUB: (sda2) (is this correct or is there a different syntax that I need to use here? It gives me (hd0) as the default.

After installing the Ubuntu OS, it then tries to install GRUB, but gets "Error: unable to install GRUB, Critical error failed" (paraphrased.)

ext3 won't let me even get past 15% of installation of the OS, but ext2 will let me get all the way to 94% when it tries to install GRUB on the root (/).

Should I download Ubuntu 7.10 and see if that solves the issue or will that not really change anything?

Running this on a Compaq Presario V4000, 1.5 GHz, 512MB RAM

grub needs to be installed to the mbr of the first bootable drive (hda or sda), if you install it to the mbr of sdb or hdb then that needs to be the first bootable drive...

ps: the file that contains the boot order can be found at /boot/grub if you need to modify it, but the boot loader must be hda or sda, or as it defaults...

Way to big 1Gb would be enough.

Also one quickie. Am I able to install Linux onto an External HD? I'm using the laptop for WinXP and wanting to put Ubuntu on the External drive as it has much more space.
