Welcome to the forums!

Did you try running Ubuntu in "live" mode first, before attempting to install?

What are the specs of your hardware?

You need more RAM, I recommend 1gb minimum for Ubuntu.

With only 256mb you can try Lubuntu, but avoid multitasking.

The user manual states a max of 512Mb! so I'll need to try your suggestion.
I wish Advent would stop trying to make laptops - they're rubbish all round and I hope they're reading this.
Thanks for your advice which is the first time in many forums I've had this advice.

There are many distributions designed for older hardware, but Ubuntu isn't one of them (it's rather bloated).
