Ubuntu downloaded now what?
 

I am new to linux and decided to download Ubuntu but I have no experience. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I would like access to user guides and tutorials. And of course a subject matter expert too.

Now that you have downloaded the ISO file conatining Ubuntu you have to burn it to a DVD. If you use Windows 7 or higher you can do that with tools that come already with Windows, otherwise you need a third party tool like Imgburn. Make sure that you burn the ISO file as image to the DVD, not as data DVD. If you don't want to (or can't) use a DVD, for example if you use a machine without DVD drive, you can use Unetbootin to "burn" the ISO file to an USB stick.

After you have done that you can start the machine from the DVD (or USB device) and give Ubuntu a test run. You don't need to install it for that.

I finally have Ubuntu 12.10 up and running. Thank you all for your comments. If you have anymore tips or suggestions please feel free to share.

Ubuntu 14.04 will be released at the end of April so keep an eye on it. With Linux is good to keep your system updated. Although for major releases I like to wait few weeks before I upgrade my system (Family computer). Sometimes the packages in the new version is not stable enough but usually after couple of weeks all potential conflicts are solved.

Ubuntu 12.10 is will be end-of-life in a couple of days, about the time 14.04 will come out, so don't put too much work in customizing your system, you will have to do a fresh install in April anyways. Once you have 14.04 installed you are safe for another 5 years.

Thank you for the information. Are any of you familar with tor? If so could you walk me through the process for ubuntu 12.10. I was able to use it in windows but don't have a clue for linux.
