Ubuntu display problems

Having successfully made a live CD for Ubuntu which works fine on my laptop on the examples without actually installing. On my HP Pavillion having an ATI Radeon xpress 200 graphics card, the desktop screen is complete but with approx 1" border around the normal screen shifted slightly to the right. The font & icons are very small. Adjusting the screen resolution to my usual 800 x 600 size with Ubuntu, the display (small) was unintelligable rather like the line timebase on an old television being out of sync. Help please!

I've had that issue before...and it seemed to be video driver dependant. Which driver are you using? fglrx? ati? radeonhd?

I have reset the monitor (CRT) to resize the display which works fine. The resolution still cannot be altered without the display becoming unreadable with Ubuntu, but Knoppix, which I have since made up a CD works OK with any resolution change. I had to initially resize the display on the monitor with Knoppix. Thanks.
