Ubuntu Desktop Environment - Studio?
 
I recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 and am not a huge fan of the Ubuntu desktop environment. I was doing some reading on the Ubuntu Studio desktop and am considering installing. Does anyone have an opinion on it and some of the pros or cons? Thanks!

last time i looked it was xfce, i think.
definitely a much better DE than unity. (well that's just my opinion)
apart from that, ubuntu studio is a multimedia (production) distro. that entails a few other things besides the gui toolkit.
are you sure you need /want that sort of specialised distro?
maybe xubuntu (also with xfce desktop) would be better as a general purpose distro.

On your original installation, you can open a terminal and run:

sudo apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies
That will give you the equivalent of a fast-running Xubuntu desktop with all its configuration options, plus all the software of Ubuntu. That includes LibreOffice, which is superior to the Abiword/Gnumeric office suite of Xubuntu.

FWIW, that setup has been my preferred arrangement for some years.

Edited: I should add, when you do install that, the login screen will show, above the password box, an Ubuntu logo. Click on that, and you will see you have the option of using either the Unity or the Xfce desktop.

There are lots of lightweight DE's out there, I like Mate but then I also like Unity

Thank you for the feedback, I did a little more research into Studio and see that it is much more than just the GUI. Still deciding if I want that and will take a look at xubuntu.

Thank you for the terminal command. I did a little looking and that is the exact type of GUI I would like. Worked like a charm, thanks again.
