Ubuntu and DRI --> Direct rendering: no
 
Well, I have tried to find tips to solve the DRI problem, but best of all replies was "Buy a new graphic-card!" Im totally lost, because I can't find any help to resolve this.

Sys.info:
os: Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, Dapper drake
g-card, AGP: Ati Radeon ViVo 64mb DDR (referred to R100 or 7200)
m-board: Asus A7M266
processor: AMD Athlon TB 1,33ghz
mem: 768 mbmonitor: CM772ET (19" 1600*1200@85hz)

Problem:
DRI missing

Some information:

And finally...
 
Log-file was a bit large, but at least.. it is now posted...

I have already tried to change default driver "ati" to "radeon" as it is in the xorg.conf right now. I have also tried different resolution (max 1024*768 @ 60 hz @ 16bit). I have no idea what else could I try.. I need direct rendering, but i don't get it "on".

Any help?

There were some libGL-files on somewhere fglrx directory but my card doesn't support fglrx and I removed those files. Not sure, was it smart at all, but it was said on the instruction to do so. Well the whole section "Userspace setup" (on http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DriTroubleshooting) was a bit confusing for me.

So.. hmm... :scratch: No answer from any "gurus". The only conclusion is: If you have problem with your linux, you're alone with your problem :tisk:

What should newbies think? Use Windows, at least you get more help if you find some problem using it.

Linux is more likely to a question mark than a tool :Pengy:

Don't be too hard on the gurus. Must be the holiday lag ... x-mas delays can be even worse.

Wish I could help. Just found myself in a similar situation. After upgrading from Breezy to Dapper, I could no longer run chromium. I forgot about it because I normally don't care. Anyway, here's my hardware info from lspci:

Adapter: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS
PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82815 815 Chipset AGP Bridge

I'll keep searching around. Get back to you if I find more info.

For starters...
Make sure AGPgart is loaded in your xorg.conf. Get rid of the references to screens that don't exist on your system (comment them out with a #). Make sure to install the Mesa DRI libraries. Install the wacom libraries, and/or comment out those lines in the xorg.conf.

Use synaptic to search for the latest ATI open source drivers by searching for "radeon". Make sure you do not have fglrx drivers installed. Your card is not supported by the proprietary drivers, only newer ones are.

Also, the R100 may be a chipset that never had full direct rendering support in Linux,... do a search on Google.

And by the way,...
Windoze is no big plus in the setup department... From experience I can tell you that Linux installation is much easier that for Windoze. Most PC manufacturers don't give you an installation disk, and they don't giv eyou all of the drivers you need for re-installation either... I can't tell you how tough a time I've had trying to re-install windoze (95 through XPee) on friends' machines. Give me Kubuntu any day!!

Thanks for the hints. Removing the fglrx modules got "direct rendering: Yes" to kick in for me. I don't remember installing that, perhaps it happened during the breezy --> dapper upgrade? Strange that it would cause such a problem with glx.

Unfortunately, chromium is still not working right ... very slow and choppy. Oh well, I'll keep digging.

Hope you're still with us ...

There are a few options you may want to play with in the xorg.conf file. Do a "man radeon" to see all of you card specific options. there's a lot for radeon, not many for my card (r128). Also, "man xorg.conf" gives you the more generic options to play with.

I recall doing a lot of tweeking with the options on some old hardware and getting it work. I just found a decent table of info on all of the components that go into accelerated 3d.
