Ubuntu 9.10 painfully slow internet

I like Ubuntu 9.10 but unfortunately my internet is crawling I cannot even get google open and have had to resort to the dreaded windows in order to get on this site.

Have you tried booting from the live cd and connecting to the internet from there? From there browse some sites and if it is not slow anymore probably something went wrong with your install. Quickest way is to do a fresh install, or we can troubleshoot the problem.

If your 'browsing is slow' then you just remove the .mozilla directory. this will clean out all the garbage and your FF will be good.

If a different browser let us know. A reinstall is not a fast solution. Browsing Google is.

The question is, When did you install 9.10? did the problem occur immediately after the install or it just suddenly became slow after days of use? if you just installed it recently, well i doubt that there would be garbage in the .mozilla directory but if you've been running it for days and suddenly it just bogged down, try what tananthulus said.

There are some cases that after an upgrade, drivers do not work as they previously do like slow internet, xorg not behaving properly etc.

This might help. Go to /etc/reslov.conf and look at what is listed there comment everything out but the lines containing actual DNS servers. stuff like localhost and 10.10.10.1 or any other local IP stuff. I have this problem every time I use dhcpcd as it refuses to leave my reslov.conf alone and insists that my local network needs to be searched for web stuff. This is however a temporary fix for this problem when you reboot dhcpcd will overwrite your reslov.conf so you may wanna create a little script that will replace the file with one that you customize each time the system boots.

Thanks for the information. I just checked in and got your replies this afternoon and I had already reinstalled this morning. Hopefully I will not have any other issues but if I do I will check back in. One thing I did make sure of was to install using the ext3 instead of ext4 file system as large files can become corrupted in ext4 although that probably did not cause the internet issue, but I suppose anything is possible. Also I am staying away from the new package manager as it had been acting up on the previous install.

First of all I am a very new user of Linux and I am facing this exact same problem. Google page will load, even searches will bring result but I cannot visit any other site. It keeps on loading and loading.

The problem started when I installed Ubuntu 9.10, and the problem started from the very beginning (so it isn't a jammed up .mozilla). At first I thought it is a FireFox issue so I installed another browser from synaptic and it was acting the same way too. Now I am suspecting that it might be my internet settings (that is those IP Address and DNS stuff).

BUT when I had Ubuntu 9.04 I did not have this problem. And I am using the same settings in 9.10 that which I used in 9.04

Wish somebody figueres this out quickly.
