Ubuntu 9.04 installation on Windows Vista Vostro PC says it's going to take 16h 10min

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hello LQ,

I am a first time Linux Ubuntu user and I was wondering why the installation is saying it will take 16h and 10min even though I have a bunch of free space available for the installation and it's a VERY new computer running Windows Vista basic with 50.6 GB free on the the C drive. I'm installing it directly to the hard drive at the moment and I'm beginning to wonder if installing it to a CD would be any faster. If anyone can offer any help on this it would be greatly appreciated.

You are probably installing Ubuntu on the C drive or some other Windblow drive, so Ubuntu is resizing space, that's why it will take that long.

My advice, use some program in Windblows to create new partition on your hard drive, but not inside C or D drive, then run Ubuntu cd and install it on that partition. It'll take 20 min. approximately.

Don't know how to do something? Ask.

Also, are you downloading extra packages from the Internet? If you have a slow connection )or the mirror is slow) that could explain some of the time it is taking.

Nope I'm not running any other windows, downloading any packages, or running any large or even medium sized programs. So you're saying I DO need to create my own ubuntu CD and not just download it directly correct? Also how would I be able to create my own partition on the Windows hard drive?

Yeah, I'm wondering, too, because I have installed Ubuntu on many, many computers and never was I presented with an install time estimate.
