I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 ISO.
I thenburned the ISO to a CD to get a bootable CD.
Checking the contents of the bootable CD shows 13 files & folders.
When I boot from this CD I get the Ubuntu Splash Screen and then I get to selct the English language. Then I get the following screen:

Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer
Install Ubuntu
Check disc for defects
Test memory
Boot from first hard drive

None of these choices work. Eventually I get a Reboot error message.
"Error reading boot CD".

I've downloaded the ISO file and I have burn them to make a bootable CD.
All of these CD's produce the same error message.

I don't know what to try next.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like bad media or bad image. Did you check the md5sum of file file you downloaded? Are you using new non-rewritable cds?

I had this *exact* same issue tonight (minus the error message, but I didn't wait around for one either). I wanted to installed 9.10 on an old Dell Dim. 2400 (2.6 GHz / 2.0 GB RAM / 80 GB HDD / integrated video).

Anyway, I d/l'd 9.10 from the main ubuntu page and burn to disc w/ ImgBurn. I came back just now and ran winmd5:

109394e294038c166479b6930679b685

According to this MD5SUMS it *should* have been:

8790491bfa9d00f283ed9dd2d77b3906 *ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso

Just finished re-downloading the iso and the md5 matches this time. I'll post back my results in a bit.

ok, reporting back...

-> booted from the NEW CD (verified iso)
-> got to Ubuntu Splash Screen
-> selected the English language
-> hit enter on "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer"

I held my breath as nothing appeared to have happened...

then a few seconds later I got the white-on-black loading screen for 9.10 !

The live boot seemed to work fine and I was able to start GParted (so far) w/o any issues. That box doesn't have any net atm so i'm posting back from the windows box.


Anyway... The moral of the story /style='rnbw' (Rocky and Bullwinkle style) is:

"Always check your checksum" or "Just because nothing blows up doesn't mean it's ok" (no obvious errors != your .iso works)

I ran the check sum before burning the image. It matched.

Everything went alright until I tried ‘Try ubuntu without any changes to your computer’.

Nothings seems to happen. How long does it take for the system to start up?

Then I let it run for a couple of hours...still nothing.

I ran the option to check the disk..after some time it came back with no errors.

I just want to get my data off a 'dead' computer.

It's a Sony laptop PCG-FX250

Any ideas?
