Ubuntu 9.10 on Acer Aspire one, Mouse issues
 

Hi Everybody,



I recently purchased a netbook(acer aspire one) and split up the partition so i could dual boot windows xp and Ubuntu 9.10. I managed to install and get everything working on both operating systems, except the mouse in Ubuntu,

On loading up, i can get in just fine, load it up click on applicaions, places, system or my power settings just fine. But when i open a window and click on anything, the mouse starts to mess up. It will not allow me to click on applications/places/system anymore and i won't be able to close the window. by using alt+f4 i can close the window, and the mouse will then allow me to click on applications/places/system again. This doens't allow me to click on any icons on my desktop though still. I'm not sure how to fix this, (as it is my first time having any issues with the mouse). I would like it to return to a normal working order... where if i have a window open i'll still be able to click on applications/places/system or any icons on my desktop. If anybody has any suggestions, it would be very helpful. Thankyou.

With Ubuntu 9.10 mouse is less likely an issue. Just check mouse connection, or replace it a new one if it has gone quite in use.

or, have you md5sum checked your Ubuntu installer ISO? If it does not disturb any data you'd better reinstall ubuntu.

Are you sure your graphics card's driver is installed? Check to see by going to System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Click on 'Visual Effects' tab -> See if you can checkmark 'Normal' or 'Extra'.

So yesterday i went through and reinstalled Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on my netbook, same issues with the mouse. I went to system, preferences, appearance, visual effects, and both normal and extra (I had to use tab and enter to select them) and neither of them really work... The mouse i know works because i bought a new one, and it works perfectly on windows. and its recognized at different times throughout using ubuntu... so now i'm even more confused.

I would not be very surprised. There are a lot of issues with Karmic. Some are related to graphics or some with apic. The stability of Karmic is still not at par with Jaunty.
And if you have a netbook, try installing a newtbook remix instead. Or else try with Jaunty live if you face the same problems.

Sounds like your graphics card driver is not installed, let's see if we install it if your mouse issue gets resolved.
First, I need to know the model of the Aspire one you have;

You should be able to find it on one of the stickers on the bottom the netbook.

Example: "Aspire One XXXX-XXXX" (Where XXXX-XXXX is your model number).

Ok, so, on the bottom of my netbook, the only model number i can find is ZG5, it is the 8.9" one if that helps. according to the windows partition, when i do a dxdiag for display it says

as far as an 8 diget model number though, i'm not seeing one.

Hmm...I have the GMA950 as well. I had a few problems with the card as well on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, so I switched to the Desktop edition, and it worked great. So, if I were you, I would get my hands on the desktop edition, and try it live, 'without any changes to your computer.'
And then try to enable 'Visual Effects,' and see if all goes well.
If it does, then installing the Desktop version might be the way to go.

If this doesn't work, or you can't do this, a couple of things you might be able to do is 1. Update your computer (Open your Update Manage by navigating to: System -> Administration -> Update Manager, and then get and install any updates), and then reboot and see if problem persists. Or, 2. Go on Intel's website, and download the driver. However, I believe the GMA950 should work out-of-box.

A last resort to re-installing the desktop edition after the above methods fail is to see if booting from an older kernel fixes it. it could just be an issue with that.

So i've now switched back to Ubuntu 8.04 desktop. and everything appears to be working fine... so I guess we're ok. I'll upgrade to Jaunty at some point in the future, but i need to finish a few programming projects in the mean time. Thanks for the help everyone.
