Unhappy Ubuntu 8.10

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 desktop edition on my system

all installation went smoothly and i got the screen where it asks for the username and password. after i put in the correct entries the screen jus remains cream in colour and it doesnt move from here. i am using a pentium 4 comp with 512 mb ram and 40 gb free space. pl tell me how to solve this. however the previous version of ubuntu works damn well... the 8.10 cd is fine the cd self check went smoothly.

If you've just installed, run it again, its the simplest answer.
