Ubuntu 8.1 install-- then blank tan screen with cursor
Hello all,
I am a linux newbie who got tired of windows virus infections and slow startups and want to try Linux. I have a Garteway pc with an Intel 82845G graphics card, 160G IDE hard disk and an Intel Celeron (R) processor @2.4Ghz and I have upgraded my RAM to 750M and I am running XP with SP3.
I am at my wits end however with the install of the Ubuntu Live CD. I am not familiar with accessing the command console or anything else, a REAL newbie. At any rate I installed the software and then VIOLA! the log in screen and after the log in screen I get just a blank tan screen with a cursor. I also notice that the light that normally blinks while the processor is "thinking" slows down its blink rate and then goes out-this happens just after the blank screen appears. I think that the program is running because if I restart and log in again, the clock is always correct. There are no error messages. I did verify the download with the MD5sum. and verified the disc as well. I tried an older version of REDHAT (C. 2004) and it loaded and worked great so I think I have hardware issues.
I tried the disc in my laptop in the demo mode ( I"m not ready to convert my laptop yet) and it worked great. My laptop is a newer(less than 2 years old) Toshiba Satellite running windows vista home premium. I"m not sure of the graphics card but it is obviously enough to run this Ubuntu release.
Is there something simple that I am missing? Would a new graphics card do the trick ? or is there a setting that I can tweek?
Sorry to be so vague but being a newbie, that is how it is
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
HMIKEH
