are you saying you are able to log in and after you have logged in it gives this message? or that it does not log in and immediately says this message when you hit 'Login'?

if the latter is true, then the only solution seems obvious: verify username and password. when you installed ubuntu you would have given a username and password. verify you are typing this information exactly into these boxes. make sure capslock and numlock are on or off, as necessary.

it is very unlikely that a basic login bug like this would have slipped through to the release. is version 8.04.1 a test release or is it 'stable'?

No, it was directly after i hit login. i ended up using a work around by loading up the recovery kernel and loading into root. i then changed the password for the admin account from root. for whatever reason the login information i provided at setup for ubuntu was not the information it was looking for. i know i was typing it in correctly and everything.

oh well, problem fixed, and i am happly running my ubuntu.

login ubuntu

I don't know if you have used other versions of linux but Ubuntu is weird. you can end up having your root password the same as your user pword and without separate patitions but it remains popular.
