Have down loaded GCC v3.4.6 compiler .First is it needed to install tar packages etc into Ubuntu 7.10. or is there a program - method all ready in Ubuntu.

The program is now on a usb stick ready to go on Ubuntu

A step by step guide would be helpfull on installing

gcc v3.4.6 is pretty old I think, the current version is 4.2 if I'm not mistaken. Anyways, you should get the .deb to install gcc, it will be alot easier
get the .deb for it here http://packages.ubuntu.com/ you just need to double click on it in ubuntu to install it

You can install gcc using your package manager (Adept or Synaptic).

How to use it? SW is typically compiled using Makefiles and the "make" command. If you don't have that, then you would just use "gcc filename". Look at "man gcc" for mor details.

OOPS!!!ailsa

You can setup the package manager to use the USB stick as a repository.

In a terminal, you can install it using APT. "man apt" for all the details.

Are you trying to install software? If so, the recommended way is to sudo apt-get install <package-name> or do an sudo aptitude (command-line gui available).

Pixallany is right, you can set the USB stick or a CD to be a repository source in your sources file or from the gui and the apt-get or aptitude will use those sources if you don't have an iternet connection.

This is a lot of work to install a outdated compiler. Is there a reason you just don't install a newer version of GCC or do a sudo apt-get install build-essential ??
