Question Ubuntu 7.04 System Lock-up

I have been using Linux for close to a month now and have been noticing a little problem on my desktop. Every now and then, randomly, my entire system will lock-up. When this happens, nothing will respond and im forced to push the reset button on the case. I know whatever is happening is probably being recorded somewhere in a log file, but I have not learned enough yet to even know where that file would even be.

At first i thought that beryl might of had something to do with it but then I noticed it would happen even when beryl was not running. I really have no idea what could be causing this to happen because I have yet to see any pattern when it happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I need to post any of my log files or system info, please tell me what I need to do. (Im a genuine newbie)

What are your hardware specs?

How long is the machine running before this happens? Could be a thermal problem.

My system:
NVidia 680i sli
Intel core 2 duo E6600
2x 1GB pc-6400
nvidia 7900 KO
2x 250GB SATA II HD's
ati tv wonder 550 (which doesnt work at all)
600w power supply

as for ventilation, i have 1 intake on the front panel and 2 exhausts on the back plus cpu and powersupply.

I havent noticed any difference in the amount of time that the system has been running. It seems to just happen randomly. If i remember right, once the computer was on for 2 whole days before it froze. other times its on for only a few hours. It actually happened while i was writing this post and i had to restart, and ive noticed that whenever it does happen, the screen flickers once and then everything is frozen and im forced to reboot. Hope some of this information is able to help.

i have that with my notebook amilo pro v3205 fujitsu-siemens (ubuntu).
1st i think that occured cuz of cpu temp but on centos computer is fine.
It mainly occurs when opening with Ubuntu. But last week i worked on ubuntu and did not shutdown system more than 80 hours.

These errors occurred a few days after i purchased the notebook.
I decided to give it back to the seller. But, cuz of my laziness
i canceled that "give it back" action few more days.
Interestingly after my give back decision laptop perform very well.
I leaved it power on 2 days and it continued to work like a rock!!

Now i am confident with its performance and it does not power off.

Fujitsu - siemens amilo is great. i offer it to all community members.

Hope it will not stop this performance after this post
