LinuxQuestions.org - Ubuntu 7.04: Screen Resolutions all too low! I need 1280 x 1024

The title pretty much says it. I can't figure out how to get Ubuntu 7.04 to allow me to adjust screen resolutions to 1280x1024 which is what I need for native resolution on my LCD monitor. The best I can do is what it's at now which is 1024x768 (too low). I would imagine there's a script file or two that I have to edit but what are they and perhaps more important where are they?

My Linux box uses a Asus A7V8X-X motherboard (socket A) with an Athlon 2800+ CPU and 1 gig of system RAM (DDR400). The video card is a (NVidia chipset) BFG GeForce 6200OC with 256Meg video RAM. The hard drive is currently a 40-gig Maxtor PATA-100 although I can change it out pretty quickly to something else when the system is off if need be and not crack the case (I use drive transport trays/drawers). The optical drive is also PATA but only a single-layer DVD-R/RW made by TDK. The Keyboard and mouse are IR-wireless but don't appear to have any conflicts when configured as standard devices and sound is whatever is embedded to the mobo. All seems to work fine except screen resolutions which I need to be 1280x1024 - it just isn't there by default.

I also have a ATI TV Wonder VE television card (bt878 tuner chip and works with North American NTSC) but I haven't yet looked into getting it to work with anything since I need my screen resolution issue resolved first. It's probably the easier fix too!

Last, I think I should also mention that I DO have high speed Internet and Ubuntu has already downloaded and installed an unsupported NVidia driver and even activated it after rebooting. But it doesn't seem to make any difference. Nothing has changed and the screen resolutions still only top out at 1024x768. Any suggestions? I suspect I just need to complete a final step, but what is it? Thanks...
