Ubuntu 5.04 with Mac TigerOSX on G3 Powerbook (pismo)
First post, newbie. I have no experience with Linux or Windows. I have been a Max OS user for many years. I own a G3 firewire powerbook (pismo). I partitioned the hard drive and installed OSX on the second partition. This computer will launch from a cd by holding down the C key so I tried an install cd for 5.04 that came with Linux Format magazine by doing that and nothing happens. Are the steps that I need to go through to install this for my particular machine posted anywhere on the net? I seem to need more explicit instructions than most people find necessary. Thanks

Are you sure that the ubuntu CD you are using is for PPC? (power PC)
if it came with the magazine, then most likely it was for intel machines. have you tried it on another computer? welcome to LQ! titanium_geek EDIT: I have almost the same mac as you (minus firewire- sniff) and my Ubuntu CD's are in the mail- so I'll see If I have any specific info for you after they arrive. |
You are right, this CD appears to only be for windows machines. Before I purchased this copy from a newsstand I had downloaded a ppc version from the Kubuntu website and tried the same thing. I just looked at that download and see that it does have a ppc file in the ISO disk image. I tried again to install it without success. What I downloaded was called, kubuntu-5.04-install-powerpc.iso. I opened this up and burned the files to a CD and that is what I tried to install by powering up while I held down the C key. I also tried it with holding down the command, option, shift and delete keys with the same results. Am I missing some vital link?

hmm... have you seen this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...iewcat&catid=8 sounds like you arent' burning the iso right. check the link out. hope this helps titanium_geek |
I'd like to add that you might want to verify the iso's using sha1sum or md5.
Here are instructions for doing this in OS X terminal: http://wincent.com/a/knowledge-base/..._md5_to_ve.php There also seems to be some issue with burning workable iso's on Macs. I dnl iso's for fedora and couldn't get them to run until I had burned them from a windows box. (Incidently: I hope to upgrade to tiger from jaguar soon on my tibook. I'm a little jealous you have it already on your pismo:).) Good luck, |
I re-downloaded the ISO, opened it, and again put it on a new CD. Still no results. I am wondering if it will work at all on Tiger. When I formatted the partition I tried it as a UNIX File System, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and as Mac OS Extended. The other remaining two options that Tiger allowed are Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive). Would either of these work?

wait- does the CD boot? do you see some "ubuntu ness" or is the CD refusing to start?

I tried downloading the ppc livecd version of ubuntu. I did not get a good return on the md5 checksum. I'm trying it again.
I burned the iso to a cd and tried to boot it anyway (by holding down the 'c' key during boot). It gave an opening screen and a 'boot:' prompt. When I hit 'enter' it returned with 'read failed'. As for your other questions- Linux runs as an independent OS from Tiger, so tiger shouldn't have any effect on what ubuntu does. Most Linux distros have a disk partitioning system that you run when you install from the cd, so it should work. Have you checked your iso against the md5? When you enter the command in the terminal it takes quite a while to return the number. Also, if you mount the cd in tiger, do you see a bunch of files or just the iso? If you just see the iso, then you need to burn the iso as an IMAGE, using toast or some such instead of the default burner included in OS X. Interesting problems. |

Okay, here's the latest. I took the iso that I had downloaded--the one that when I burned it on my Tibook wouldn't work--burned the iso to a cd. Then I took it to my wife's windows box, transferred the iso to her drive, then burned the image to a cd using nero.
I brought that cd back to my tibook, booted holding the 'c' key, then hit 'enter' at the 'boot:' prompt. It took a while, but ubuntu configured itself, found all settings, configured itself for my wireless connection, leased an ip, launched nautilus. I'm now typing this using firefox under ubuntu. So, in short, it works like a champ:) I think the problem has something to do with how Macs burn iso's, because this is the second time I've encountered this problem. Any knowledgeable people out there that understand this problem and have a solution? (I hate using windoze) |
I did a little searching and found this:
Burning ISO images in OS X **edited to add** You can probably burn ISO images just fine in Linux now :) |
Thanx girlboxer5, that did the trick. It seems that the first time I tried that method I mistakenly mounted the image, then copied the files to toast--that does not work!
It's a bit funny though-the path that the article goes through is correct, except that, as every Mac user knows, there is no 'start' menu:) So, to summarize 1. download the iso 2. verify using md5 or sha1sum (optional) 3. Go to /applications/utilities/disk copy (The icon is right next to the disk utility you normally use to repair permissions--you DO regularly repair permissions, right?;)-- 4. choose 'burn iso' from the pull-down menu 5. navigate and choose your iso 6. burn the cd After the burn is complete, shut down, then start while pressing the 'c'. (it didn't work when I merely rebooted). The mac will chime, then go to a grey screen, maybe flash once or twice, then (hopefully) it starts from the cd. |
