Ubuntu 5.04

I found an old pentium III sony vaio in my basement, so i decided i would try out ubuntu on it. the only one it can handle is 5.04, hoary hedgehog. i have everything all set up, but i'm having a lot of difficulty finding software that is compatible with this older version. i really want to get some kind of music player, if at all possible one that is compatible with the Zune, a c++ and or python compiler, and quake II. i have the quake 2 install disc, but im not sure how to run them on ubuntu. So, if anyone can help me with getting these programs and installing them onto the laptop, i would really appreciate it. This is my first time using linux, so any other tips would also help

No offense, but duh. Of course you're having trouble, the distribution is almsot 4yrs old, and has been past its EOL date for almost 2.

1st. Lose the idea of the Zune, only way you'll get that to work, is eithe run windows, or run windows in vmware, and its highly unlikely that PC has the horsepower to run vmware.

2nd. You'll need to run wine to run Quake on Ubuntu, and the chances of you finding a compatible wine w/ a distribution that old, is slim to none.

What are the specs of this PC, that you think it cannot run the current version of Ubuntu? If you can't run the current version of Ubuntu, then you probably need to look at another CURRENT distro, rather than running one that is old and outdated.

im fully aware its an old version. i have an old computer, so i figured id try it. i don't know why i picked 5.04, it was second to the bottom on the list i had. i know i can't run the most current verion, because when i put the live CD in, rather than going to the main page like it does on my PC, it goes to the shell. the specs on the laptop are:

128 MB ram, PC-100
20 gig HDD
ATI Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x
Pentium III 750 mhz

yeah, its old. i really just wanted to see if i could get it working, but now that it is i want to do as much as i can with it.

Most likely the reason you went to the shell, is because that machine does not have the Ram to run a Live CD... If you like Ubuntu... I would look at Xubuntu... also w/ the low ram on that PC.. you'll want to use the Alternate Install CD (available at Xubuntu.org, look for alternate in the filename)...

Another option, would be to install Fluxbuntu. I believe it is based on Ubuntu 7.10, but that would be a far better choice than what you've done. It however, is far lighter than Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, and is actually quite functional.

Or one final option, if you want to install Ubuntu from a minimal CD, and then install Fluxbox on top of it, you could do that, and essentially have Fluxbuntu 8.04....

I would suggest Vector Linux. You are at the minimum RAM for the Standard Edition but better if you try the Light Edition.

Absolute Linux is also very nice.

To really get the most out of the laptop you need to max out the RAM if you haven't already.

If you can install more ram in that laptop, it will run any distribution you want. I have an old compaq armada e500s with a 650Mhz Pentium 3 and 512MB ram. It runs ubuntu 8.04 fine, except no desktop special effects due to video limitations. Most pentium 3 systems that run over 500Mhz have chipsets that will accept 512MB ram.
