Ubuntu

Is this forum for all flavors of Linux. I did not see, so far, any reference to Ubuntu. Is that covered too ?
If I download stuff relating to Linux is it going to work on my version of Ubuntu (13.10).
Thanks

Much of the material on these forums relates to many flavours (distros) of linux. If you are interested in questions specific to Ubuntu then you can go to this forum.

You need to download stuff for your Ubuntu from Ubuntu package manager. Either the Ubuntu software center, synaptic or using the apt-get command.

You can find an Ubuntu sub forum in this web site but if your question is very general you can posted it on here.

Anyway if you have more question about these tools I mentioned early you can ask directly about how to use then.

Also you can mention what software you are looking to install.

Buy generally don't install on Ubuntu software made for Fedora or for other OS.

Ubuntu

you can download source as well as compile and install it just as well on ubuntu as any other distro. there are, however, several prerequisites necessary to do this (compilers, headers, etc) which are not installed on a vanilla Ubuntu system. Generally it is for this reason that people generally just get things from the package management system, it handles prerequisites, installation, basic configuration for you. it is much easier and faster. there are advantages to compiling something specifically for your system, but a faster install and simple configuration, maintenance, upgrades, are rarely among them.

IMO if you are working with Ubuntu it is imperative to learn to use the apt-get package management tool and using repositories, PPA , sources.list file. This will make your life much easier dealing with installation of programs, and updates. You have come to the right place. Welcome.
