Ubuntu 14.04 login - can only see desktop wallpaper

Hi, I forgot to plug in my charger on my macbook-pro 11,1 and the computer shut down over night.

Now when I boot I get to the login screen and enter my credentials.

But it doesn't load the desktop. Only the wallpaper and that's it.

I can switch to tty 1-6 and do a startx and unity - - reset-icons but whenever I try to load tty 7 or reboot it just has the wallpaper after login.

Is there any way I can fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Instead of xinit just run
Code:
X &
xterm -display :0&
Switch to X and in the terminal run unity. Any error messages printed out on the terminal might give you a clue as to what exactly is happening. You could also rm the unity configuration from ~/.config or wherever it is and start over.

Error is that an X server is already running.

Going to be annoying if I have to reinstall ubuntu just because my battery went flat.

I have removed cache, config and compiz from ~/

I have installed xfce but still can only load the desktop wallpaper after login.

Reinstalled unity. No good.

Updated system. No good.

I'm all out of ideas. It loads the login screen fine which is lightdm I think. Tried restarting that service which was no good.

I just tried and I can successfully login using guest session. So this leads me to believe it is something wrong with my user profile from when the power cut out.

Any help would be appreciated.

So shut it down:
Code:
sudo killall X
Do keyboard shortcuts work? Reinstall won't be required, though. Try removing all folders that start with "." in ~, except for those you need or might seem entirely unrelated to unity (like ~/.libreoffice e.g). Haven't used unity so can't comment but the only thing wrong here is that the file that controls what starts up at login is corrupt. All that is required is to find and remove it.

Weird. When I try that it says no process X found.

As a work around I have created a new user from the terminal and can login ok via that.

Yeah I've been going through and removing stuff from there and rebooting. No luck thus far. Keyboard shortcuts do work.
