Unhappy Ubuntu 12.10 Wireless problems on LGR40 laptop

Hello forum!

I decided to take the plunge into a Linux OS. I did a USB install of Ubuntu 12.10 and erased my Windows Vista on an older LGR40 laptop.

However, I'm encountering a few problems. First off is my wireless connection. My computer detects the connections, but fails to connect to them.

Another problem (which might be related to the fact Ubuntu needs to download updates ?) is that most of my applications are not running at all. Clicking on them, even LibreOffice, does not open the application.

Any help into this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Em

Welcome to LQ!
If the wired connection is working use that to get the updates for now.

About your wireless, if you could post the details of your adapter that is going to help us to help you fix the problem,
so in the terminal/console type:
Code:
$ dmesg | grep -i wlan
Also
Code:
$sudo lspci -v | grep -i wlan
Post the results inside the code tags to increase readability, see BBcodes.

This is a important read about wireless: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...y-list-456983/

Regards

Updates for your distribution are obtained by having the repositories listed in your sources.list located in:
/etc/apt/sources.list. To edit your sources list you can use Nano or what other text-editor came with Ubuntu by typing cat /etc/apt/sources.list into your terminal.

What are Repositories?
