Smile Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 Bit newbie simple question to begin with

Hi all,
I have recently chosen this O/S as the engine for my workstation machine. To begin with I have a fairly simple question.

What is the desktop environment (DE) for ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 Bit, that being the default one. I was always under the impression that it was GNOME 3, but there seems to be some confusion (probably on my part) whether it is in fact called UNITY. To indicate that GNOME 3 has been played with to unify it with the ubuntu O/S.

So what's the story folks?

Thanking you in advance,
Jonathan.

Cool Thanks - just a verify

This sort of answers my question, so the GNOME supplied with ubuntu 12.04 LTS is only different in the sense of the shell interface. So when "sysinfo" reports GNOME version as being unknown it actually means "unity"?

Cheers,
Jonathan.
