ubuntu 12.04 freezes all the time after fresh install

Hello guys, I have reinstalled ubuntu 12.04 on my dell xps 17.
I have installed it from a bootable USB. Now, the system freezes at random and well, the only alternative is to press the power button I am afraid.
I have updated the kernel (http://askubuntu.com/questions/25761...el-to-3-5-0-23) thinking that this could have solved the problem but no joy.
I have no idea what's going on, can anybody give me a hand to diagnose and repair please?
thanks

He probably went with 12.04 because it's a LTS release...I did the same thing for my server.

About your freeze-and-crash problem: I had something similar happen in Win8. (Yes, I know that Linux != Windows) THe thing that worked for me was to defrag the disk. Now, how to do that...? Honestly, I don't know. Maybe Linux is has a small resemblance of thinking, and doesn't even have the problem to begin with.

Did you run Windows on this system, and if so did it freeze a lot too? If so, it may be a hardware problem and I'd suggest running memtest86 and other hardware diagnostics.

hello guys,
@yooy: I don't know if it's the kernel, I just thought I'd try something. I wouldn't want to install ubuntu 13.10 for the reason that maples said.
@btmiller windows seems to be running ok. I restarted and at boot I selected memtest, so it is currently testing - I will post the results as soon as it is finished but it is a 40% pass now and there are no errors.

Presuming a laptop, might be heat - turn it over and check the vents. I have an i7 that has had the motherboard replaced because the the on-board video chip burnt out. I now regularly take the back off to clean the vents and fan. The venting is IMHO insufficient for a chip like this.

syg00, thanks but it is not the vent and it isn't overheating. I had ubuntu installed for years and nothing ever happened. Today I have reinstalled 12.04 and straightaway it started to freeze up.

Just an idea, actually 2:
1)from memory the nvidia drivers ahave been problematic in the past and I read somewhere that they were a source of problem for ubuntu. WOuld it be wise to disable them and use something else, like xorg? if so I wouldn't mind trying but I need somebody assistance please.
2)other than the memory test can i run a video test of some kind? SOmebody pointed me to this resource here http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd but most of those tests files have executables so I don't know if I can use them for linux too
thanks

Hello guys, I thought I'd post my log, it might help somebody to understand what's going on. I can see a lot of errors everywhere and I can see that the nvidia seems to have something to do with it
Hopefully somebody might be able to suggest something :-)? The below is just an extract, I have attached the whole dump in a separate document because apparently I had reached the upper limit of characters allowed in the thread
thanks

right guys, I think I found out something...not sure how critical this is but it might help.I had 2 crashes in the last 20 minutes, one at about 21.24 (UK time) and another one at 21.30.
Now, I checked the log again and I found these entries at exactly 21.24 and 21.29:

Code:

So what does that tell us?
One is an issue with the network card. I can't explain that, the laptop connects to the network. Is there any package I can download to fix this?
Dnsmasq I have read it has something to do with the network as well. Can it be disabled - and if so is it a good idea?
ANd then more worringly there is this: EXT4-fs (sda6): re-mounted. Opts: errors=remount-ro. I think this has something to do with the HD partition?!
