Ubuntu 11.10 desktop fails to load with Xinerama/Nvidia

I hope this is the right forum for this question:

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 on a 64 bit AMD machine with an Nvidia 460 graphics card. I'd like to run dual monitors using Xinerama. The initial install went without a hitch but now I can't enable Xinerama through Nvidia X server settings without losing my desktop. After enabling Xinerama the login screen loads and accepts my password and I get my wallpaper displayed on both monitors and a responsive mouse cursor across all displayable real estate, but that's it. No launcher appears and keyboard inputs are ignored. I've included my current xorg.conf, with Xinerama set to "0" so I can run my desktop. I hope someone here can provide me with some insight.

Code:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 280.13 (buildd@allspice) Thu Aug 11 20:54:45 UTC 2011

Try making a new xorg.conf with the nvidia-xconfig utility. Here is my xorg.conf, generated with that utility, that is working for two monitors with Xinerama.

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 280.13 (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-03.nvidia.com) Wed Jul 27 17:15:58 PDT 2011

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 260.19.06 (buildd@yellow) Mon Oct 4 15:59:51 UTC 2010
# commented out by update-manager, HAL is now used and auto-detects devices
# Keyboard settings are now read from /etc/default/console-setup

Running nvidia-xconfig helped a little, but I still can't use the second monitor. THe cursor "X"s out when I move over it, and now my keyboard input lag has increased to an intolerable degree. Here's the xorg.conf that I have now:

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 280.13 (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-03.nvidia.com) Wed Jul 27 17:15:58 PDT 2011
