ubuntu 11.04/windows xp s3. At boot up, no response to keyboard

Hi,

New here so I hope this is okay to post in this section, even though it is about an ubuntu/xp issue.

In order to read an HD from my (now dead) mac, I have installed ubuntu 'under' windows (I think) from a pendrive. All appeared to go okay.

At start-up, I get asked which OS to boot into, but there is no response from any keyboard commands, so I have yet to be able to boot up ubuntu... xp still works fine, after the 30 second wait expires.

The keyboard is USB, and I can access and control the bios ok with it.

I can't find any posts on this; it may be just that I don't recognise the terms used by other posters to refer to this, so I apologise if I've missed something obvious.

Thanks,

Richard

Just when it fails to respond, try unplugging the keyboard from the USB port and plugging it back into a different one.

If just may work.

Then, update your Ubuntu install.

Thanks andrewthomas,

I tried the keyboard in all 6 usb ports. No joy! Do you mean I should try and reinstall ubuntu from the usb stick again? I was hoping to avoid all that, but if I have to...

My usb keyboard is failing when attached via any port in a hub, but works when attached directly top the Dell A90 laptop body. The mouse works either way. The test for "working" was "does the caps light work". Googling for help. Ubuntu 11.

In some bioses (mine, for instance) the default setting for usb keyboard and mouse is "disabled", so you have to enable these. Otherwise, the KB still works for fiddling with the bios, but disappears as soon as control is handed over to the boot loader

I found my problem. My fault completely. I labeled the USB plugs incorrectly. When I thought I was plugging the keyboard into the hub I was actually plugging the hub into the hub. That didn't work.

martin :-)
