Ubuntu 10.10 boots to terminal (graph card issue)

Hi there!
I believe my issue is raher simple to fix, yet i cant seem to find a solution on the net.
Whenever i boot to ubuntu (v. 10.10), it automatically goes into terminal. I recently changed video cards. I previously owned an NVIDIA graphics card, and now i've switched to a AMD Radeon HD 7700 card. I'm almost sure the problem has got something to do with that.
Thanks

The good news is that Ubuntu 10.10 has reached its "end of life" and is no longer supported in any way. So, you can start from scratch by test-driving the currently-supported 12.04 or 12.10 release, and maybe your card will "automagically" work.

So, should i format the partition and install ubuntu 12.10? Or is there a way to upgrade to 12.10 without the need of formating the partition?
To be honest, i would preffer the latest.

I recommend you test-drive as a Live DVD or USB before you make any permanent decisions.
