Ubuntu 10.04 monitor resolution 1024x768 not available.

How do I make my LCD monitor operate at 1024x768 in Ubuntu 10.04??
At present the largest option available is 800x600.
Video card is a ASUS ENGT430 NVIDIA with DDR3 ram
I have tried 12.04 did not like it I could not find what I wanted.Fancy looking.
Knoppix is the distro that looks the most appealing
but according to reports when its loaded on to the HD it does not function as well as off of the CD.

I would guess your system is not set up with the right video card driver. What is your video card or what kind of computer do you have? have you installed all the available upgrades? Is there a reason why you don't want to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04? there had been lots of changes since 10.04

Good luck to you.

I hope this post helps other newbies! Maybe some oldies too.
The reason my Ubuntu 10.04 would not recognize my LCD monitor at a greater resolution than 800X600 was, that I had the monitor hooked up to the computer by SVGA. It requires that you be hooked up via DVI for any resolution over 800X600.
Thanks for giving my problem some consideration.
