ubuntu 10.04 booting

I have a one TB hdd and one 120 gb hdd.

One TB hdd has windows xp with four partitions.

120 gb hdd has ubuntu 10.04 version with all updates.

While shuting down ubuntu, it was delayed and the supply had to be switched off. After that, booting with ubuntu was not possible. Windows was working.

Whenever ubuntu was booted, it stopped at 'initramfs'. In trying to repair the problem, the windows partition was damaged and windows xp had to be reloaded.

In the process, I am unable to boot in ubuntu.

I would like to reboot the ubuntu system without reformatting.

Would appreciate help.

Hi!
First I would find out where Grub is installed. If you have a live medium Ubuntu, please copy and paste the following comand into a Terminal:
Code:
sudo fdisk -l 2>/dev/null | egrep "Disk /|/dev/" | sed "s#^/dev/#Part /dev/#" | awk '{print $2}' | sed 's/://' | xargs -n1 -IX sudo sh -c "hexdump -v -s 0x80 -n 2 -e '2/1 \"%x\" \"\\n\"' X | xargs -n1 -IY sh -c \"case \"Y\" in '48b4') echo X: GRUB 2 v1.96 ;; 'aa75' | '5272') echo X: GRUB Legacy ;; '7c3c') echo X: GRUB 2 v1.97 oder v1.98 ;; '020') echo X: GRUB 2 v1.99 ;; *) echo X: No GRUB Y ;; esac\""
I found it on
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB-Umge...=grub%20finden
changing /translating one word (kein -> no).
Part of my output:
Code:
/dev/sda: GRUB 2 v1.99
/dev/sda1: No GRUB 00
/dev/sda2: No GRUB 00
/dev/sda3: No GRUB 6f74
/dev/sda4: No GRUB 00
/dev/sda5: No GRUB 00
sda: Grub 1.99 -> in the MBR (Master Boot Record of the first hd)
sda3: 6f74 -> primary Partition #3 with filesystem fat32
sda4 extended partition
sda5 logical partition
