Ubuntu 'DiskCleanup'
First week on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, very impressed with speed and small memory required. I am wondering if a disk cleanup utility is embedded in system, or if one is even required. I have been a SolidWorks / CATIA
engineer of fourty years now and I know the importance of saving my work; doing backups, disk cleanup etc on regular basis. I also have concerns on Thunderbird / Gmail link, as to it's security. Windows 'Live' anything,,,not so good,,, imo. |
I recommend BleachBit. I don't remember if it's installed by default (pretty sure it isn't), but you can find it in Ubuntu Software Center.

@ everest40 and k3?tO1
BleachBit, catchy term and thanks, I'll try it. "but things like defragmenting are not really required on Linux Journaled Filesystems like ext3 and ext4. It is always important to backup but if you have a separate /home partition the danger of losing important information is lower because if you have a system crash that requires a reinstall your /home more often than not will not require any work." like ext3 and ext4 separate /home partition I do not understand either,, but: I installed 14.04 LTS on / over / on top of / Gate's Win7.[an abomination imo] In 'system monitor' reads, /dev/sda1 / ext4 976.5 GB 920.0 GB 6.8 GB and /dev/sdc1 /media/(name)vfat 15.6 GB 15.5 GB 51.8 MB ext4 is the type methinks, just what THAT means I dunno. I have a UBS stick always active for the backup and have backed the system up on it last night. So far, I'm like a two-year-old, with a new shinny toy.......... Thank you Both, VERY much for responding |

Yes,,, BleachBit is embedded in Ubuntu's software center.
Just thought of another concern, I have followed "Cryptohippie's Guide To Online Privacy" [attached] on Firefox [noscript, betterprivacy; only, sofar] and now feel that it may not be required. [most cumbersome indeed] Any thoughts opinions most welcomed. The main reason for my quest to Ubuntu,, security.. I almost feel like a theif, asking all these questions; Must have taken you folks many nights to do all the engineering. |
