ubunto 9.4 update problem

hi, ive just started using ubunto 9.4 but when i try to update to 11 as it says is available it starts to download it but then tells me there isnt enough disk space for the 1500 0r so mb required...i have 32 gig free space on the c drive...can you held and thanks in advance...dave.

amani 06-30-2011 10:36 AM

C drive?

Better install ubuntu on a separate partition e.g make a large free space and let the ubuntu installer use all of it.
Also boot from the install cd while installing.
Use the latest Ubuntu 11.04 or the long-term support version 10.04.2

dr_agon 06-30-2011 10:51 AM

c drive belongs to Windows.

You have to know what linux has available. Open a terminal and give df command, it will display filesystems with available space and mount points. Look at its output or post it.

snowday 06-30-2011 10:53 AM

Since you are "just starting" I recommend you start with a supported release (10.04 or newer).

daveblogs 06-30-2011 02:23 PM

hi guys and thanks,
ive already installed it on the pc ,can i uninstall it and start again, cant seem to find where it is tho, its running with windows xp on the pc...i use a dongle to get on line so cant afford to do big down loads, cheers.

This is where your system really resides, and you have only 1% free space from 2,4GB given to Ubuntu.

If you do not want huge downloads, why update with "1500 or so mb required" and not download typical distro which fits on 750MB CD?

daveblogs 07-01-2011 12:12 PM

hi and thanks, i just thought it would be good to up date it but it isnt really that important,i was hoping that and update would solve things like i cant get the dvd writer to play or watch film clips that are off my phone etc or mp3 tunes (will play wav ok)and burning software etc, when i try and play mp3 it says check for available software but always comes up with an error code no matter what i try to get working but there again i am new to this...thanks again...dave.

snowday 07-01-2011 04:35 PM

The following command will install most common codecs including mp3 and DVD playback:

Code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Obviously that assumes you are running a supported release (10.04 or newer).

daveblogs 07-01-2011 06:30 PM

hi snowpine and thanks, i run terminal and it came up with this. still cant play mp3 or dvd, dvd writer wont mount.

Please re-read my post carefully. You are using an UNSUPPORTED RELEASE. Install a supported release, and then you can easily install all necessary codecs.

Wim Sturkenboom 07-02-2011 12:26 AM

I also suggest that you allocate a bit more space. You will run into problems about everytime that you do an update. Give Ubuntu 10GB (if you're not planning to install a lot of software) or more (if it becomes /will be you're main OS).

daveblogs 07-02-2011 05:35 AM

hi guys and thanks again,
i think the way to go is start again from scratch,is it possible to uninstall this 9.4 or do i have to format the hard drive so i can install a supported linux and if so how do i uninstall this one....thanks.

TigerLinux 07-02-2011 05:56 AM

just reinstall the latest ubuntu 11.04.
why stick to old version?

If you installed 9.04 on its own partition, then use the installer's "manual partition" option to replace 9.04 with the new release (10.04 or 11.04).

(If you used an alternate install method, like WUBI, I don't know the answer.)

Make sure you have backed up all documents (on Linux AND Windows) to an external drive, and that you've extensively test-driven the Live CD of the new release to make sure it recognizes your hardware and meets your needs.
