Types of editors? text vs graphical
 

Tell me if I have this straight or not please.

Kwrite and gedit are graphical editors?

vi and emacs are text editors?

Hopefully I have it straight finally but I would like to know from the experts.

Well, they would technically all be text editors...but I guess you are referring more to the interface of the application itself. So in that sense yes, Gedit and Kwrite are graphical programs, and emacs and vi are used on the command line.

It is very confusing but I think that is enough to clear it up. The whole "graphical editor" thing had been throwing me for a loop for the last couple of days. THANKS!

I think the misconception you have is between gui and command line not between editors. Programs like vi use the base linux console to allow you to edit the file contents and save them. It does not depend on kde or gnome or any desktop. Kwrite and others like that use the desktop gui to open and will only work when the desktop is running. Kwrite is a bit like Microsoft's Write program but better IMHO.
