type of mail software

How do I tell what kind of mail software I have installed on my mail server? I need to know what the pop3 part is. The SMTP is sendmail I am assuming. Also, what is the best kind to have? And how do I know if I have an MTA installed? Do you need one to run a mail server? Thanks

Your pop3 software will be probably listed in /etc/inetd.conf (if you're using inetd). Run
cat /etc/inetd.conf|grep pop-3
you'll get a line where your pop3 software is listed. One of the elements will be path (and filename) of your pop3 software.
OR
Browse your logs (especially in /var/log/mail), it should be shown when someone's using pop3.
