My Reso is at: 1400 x 1050 Depth: Millions

This might help to.

Not bad for that P120 with 16M RAM that you told us about.

Oh...you didn't tell us...did you? :tisk:

DrOzz 12-01-2003 08:32 AM

well although you didn't tell what your machine is, which does matter if you want an "educated" answer, the first thing i can see that is causing slow downs regardless if you even have a 2ghz machine is these couple of things:
your resolution
your crap video card
rh9
and kde 3.1

o0black0o 12-01-2003 07:15 PM

It has to be My Video Card it is Very old and Out Dated..

Ill try getting one.. Sorry To bother you

I wasn't thinking

krazyglue 12-01-2003 10:13 PM

First off, your video card should have little to do with the amount of time it takes for an application to load. What type of apps are you trying to load? What type of system do you have (better yet, what is your cpu speed and amount of RAM?). I am personally running a 2200XP w/ 512meg RAM, and I think some apps take a few to start up (like open office).

o0black0o 12-02-2003 01:46 PM

Apps are everything from Modzilla to Games..

My CPU is skipping from 4.00 - 18.00 not that bad..
Ram I think I have a bit less than 256 meg

Office take a shit load of time.. Takes about 1:30 to open...
My computer was Custom Build so I don't know that much about it.. Specially how much Hz

krazyglue 12-02-2003 01:57 PM

When your PC boots up it should show the speed of the CPU, check and see what it is. I would guess you could use an overhaul/upgrade of your system to improve it. Somethings you could check before buying stuff would be to check your bios and make sure everything is set correctly. Check your bus speed, and your CPU clocking to make sure it is running at the best it can.

Do those in a terminal, and copy and paste the
output.

cat /proc/cpuinfo
cat /proc/meminfo
hdparm /dev/hda
(assuming Linux is on the first IDE Hard disk)

linux IS excellent at multitasking, meaning effectively managing and processing a number of tasks at once....

you are looking more at "responsiveness" and quite frankly, comparing apples and oranges. like a v8 engine is to a four banger, linux is "heavier" than windows, bug has more net net, overall power and efficiency.

kipp 12-02-2003 04:56 PM

a tip.. pre-emptive kernel? wouldnt that aid in responsiveness.. as said above, your video card probably has little to no effect on load times... KDE is sluggish in general with low specs. RH9 also may have lots of unneeded services hoggin your RAM. I assume your quite new to linux, and if that is the case, learn some more on system configuration. It will help alot and then you will see the power. Good Luck

hdparm /dev/hda

I don't know What my Hd is on.. I can't figure it out... But I will try..

o0black0o 12-02-2003 09:03 PM

I checked with my Linux Install Disc.. It said hda - hda2 - hda3

i tired all of them and they didn't work same error, Command not found...

I know I did the right cmd cause i did the man for it..

Is there any other way to tell?

davoman 12-02-2003 11:57 PM

Well I'm on a 1ghz Duron. Not much beyond what you're running on. I have more RAM though (320MB). I find programs take a conciderably long time to start. However I'm running KDE aswell. Have people noticed a conciderable performance difference between KDE and Gnome? I don't like any of the other desktops - too unusual or far-fetched.

Run it as root ... normal users don't have
direct hardware access ...

Besides that, those times seem reasonable

This is the same thing I get..

[root@localhost name]# hdparm /dev/hda/
bash: hdparm: command not found
