Two Fedora Core 5 question + a Mplayer Question
 

Hi All I have just upgraded my laptop from Windows XP to Fedora Core 5. But there are two things which are bougthing me.

In Windows XP I was used to have maximum monitor resolution of 1024x768, but in Fedora the maximum resolution is 800x600.

My laptops graphics chip is ATI Radeon IGP 330M.

Any way to force Fedora to be able to go up to the 1024x768 resolution?

Secondly there is WiFi Encryption. My WiFi router supports both WPA and WEP, but I have found out howto engage WPA encryption yet in Fedora. Anyhow then I enable WEP encryption, then my PCMCIA Wifi card Asus WL-100, is unable to connect to my router. But the I deactive WEP encryption, then I can connect to my WiFi router without any problems.

Any idears on howto resolve this?

Finally I have just downloaded and installed MPlayer and is playing a dvd movie as I write this, but is the plugin or package for MPlayer which allows it play a DVD continiously ?

For changing your resolution, you should take a look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I'm not using a linux machine right now, but there is a section in that file where you can edit certain display modes. Editing the display modes should allow you to choose other resolutions.

I don't know much about your WEP issue, but for WPA support you should install a program called wpa_supplicant. Also, you may want to find out if the specific driver that you are using for this card in linux is compatible with WPA and/or WEP. If it isn't, then you should be able to install the Windows driver with ndiswrapper to get the full functionality.

I'm not sure what you're asking about the Mplayer plugin. If you're talking about the browser plugin, that is used as a way to watch embedded video files on webpages.

You could also try reconfiguring your display using "system-config-display".

The screen resolution can be set to 1024 x 768 easily in Fedora Core 5.
Log out as user, then login as root. (Type 'root' as username, then use your root password.) When the desktop loads up, on the taskbar, click system, then in the preferences menu click 'screen resolution'. A GUI will open and you can change your resolution.
When you have completed the change, log out as root and login as user. This is very important for the security of your system.

I use FC5, too.
