Turkish hackers

Hello, I'm completely new here and very new to Linux. So far, things have been going well but yesterday when I went to a new website, I got a message saying that I had been hacked. There was a lovely little picture of a grave and some complaints about Israel.

What should I do now? Is my system at risk?

Any suggestions would be really helpful.

All the best!

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

First, I doubt your machine has been compromised. While there are malicious websites that use pop-up windows that claim you have been hacked, they usually are trying to get you to pay for *their* anti-malware, which, in some cases does nothing at all, and in others, it may turn out to be spyware, trojan, etc. However, I've not heard of any cases where the malware was written for Linux.

For future protection, you may want to install a firewall and anti-virus, and scan your PC just to be sure you're safe. I use Firestarter firewall & AVG4Linux anti-virus.

Cheers

While the risk of being infected exists, by the far the greater majority of these messages popping up in your browser are simply spoofs meant to fool windows users into installing some piece of "cleaning" crapware. Ironic isn't it? Tell people they have malware installed so they'll install yours - and feel glad they do, too...
Of course, windows crapware infects only windows systems so there is not much to worry about - especially if you don't click on any "install now" buttons.

I think I've visited a page like that. If the page is what I think it is, it's basically some hackers that exploit various security holes in different web-servers. It's just their footprint. Like gangs tag walls with graffiti, they have standard page they upload to insecure servers. A google search of that will revile mange pages hacked by the same people. You as a client aren't in any danger. But don't do anything there. Don't click any links, download any files, install any software etc. Just leave the site.

I agree that this is nothing more than a possible political act along with malicious act to cause you to worry. First, if you were using GNU/Linux then you have less worry than with a M$ product.

If you wish then you can look into 'chrootkit' to ease some worry for a possible root kit problem.

If you are using 'FF' browser with your GNU/Linux then use the 'NoScript' addon to have control of those scripts that create nuisance.

This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

You'll probably find that message is intended for the owners of the website, they have been attacked, not you

Hello everyone,

Thanks so much for all these replies. I've calmed down a bit and it's great to get some useful advice. Much appreciated!

The one I like is the one that pops up and tells me I have a virus in my registry.

Hi,

My big concern are the 'script kiddies'. They are nothing more than a nuisance but that does create issues for some. As it did for the OP.
