Unhappy trying to use Darwin Ports, editing the etc/profile file

i found this file and i can usually save/edit with vi easy enough but when i try and edit this file it says that its a read only file, then i type :w! and it says "profile e212 cant open for writing". Whats up wit this?! all im trying to do is add "export PATH=$PATH:/opt/local/bin" to the file. And BTW where should i insert that line of text into. Thanks a bunch people.
