Trying to start Mysql server

I am trying to setup MYSQL and after I put in this command /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password' I put my own password in there. I get this error message.

/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)'

What am I doing wrong. In case you need this I am using Slack 10.1

It doesn't appear that mysql is running. Did you install the initial database? If not, the very first thing you should do is run:
Code:

su - mysql
mysql_install_db

Then you should change the permissions on /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld so that it's started automatically upon boot, assuming that's what you want. You can do that with:
Code:

chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld
Then start the server like this:
Code:

/etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld start
Then try to reset your password again.

I'm having the same problems, did all the stuff already you posted in your post.....
MySQL shoudl be running normally as far as i can see. I think i configured it right. But when i try to give a password it does this....
Code:

root@maarten-server:/# /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password '******'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)'

P.S. a real linux and slackware noobie, but learning fast ;)
Also using slackware 10.1 btw

Try this

Code:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -p
