Trying to record

Hello! I am a complete newb. I am trying to record my guitar. I have a Focusrite scarlett 2i4 audio interface. the programs I have downloaded so far are Audacity, Ardour, and QjackCTL. I have almost no Linux experience and only experience with Fruity Loops Studio in Windows.

And... What have you tried to do? What has worked and what hasn't?
I googled your audio interface and it seems it might just work straight away or you might need to use JACK to work with it. If people here can't help you might need to look to a Linux audio forum or mailing list for help.
To start with thought I would have a google around about JACK and Linux DAWs because while Linux is great for making music it can take some configuring to get things right.
I don't record audio under Linux myself but have a friend who has been doing so for years so I've heard the toils and successes.
Oh, if you're after a more out-of-the-box solution then Ubuntu Studio may make it easier to get going though there's nothing about it that can't be replicated with normal Ubuntu (or Debian or even Fedora or such) if you want to.

Thank you for the info! I have tried messing around with jack and such, I cant figure out how to get my computer to read the audio interface.

and I'm using Linux mint 17.1 if that helps.

If you plug the Focusrite in then start JACK it should be seen as an output in JACK. If you're not using JACK then it should be seen in alsamixer or alsamixergui. However, if you have PulseAudio running, which I suspect you have, then you should see it in Pulse Audio Volume Control (pavucontrol is the name of the application).
Whichever you use you will have to mess around finding which channel is which and you may have to unmute it in ALSA to get it to play in Pulse Audio (I would try to get it playing to begin with so you can confirm it's seen).
Sorry I can't be of more specific help but the closest I've come is using a PCI card.

OK! I got it working and I can record my guitar through the audio interface into Audacity now. Now I am trying to figure out how to use Rakarrack in all of this. Whenever I open Rackarrack all my audio on my computer stops and I cant figure out how to get it back without restarting my computer.

Cool :) so you know Linux sees it and it's working.
So, looks like Rakarrack is a JACK application, JACK is pretty unfamiliar territory for me but what I do know is that whilst JACK is running it takes over the audio hardware exclusively so that nothing else can run*. So, you'll need to open your various JACK controls and find the source and sink devices that correspond to the Focusrite and enable them. It has been a while since I played with JACK but I seem to recall that to the uninitiated there may be some guesswork involved.

*It is possible to use JACK and ALSA but let's not complicate things as you need both working first.

Bariman has several podcasts about recording music at Hackerpublicradio.org. It's a couple of years old, but I am certain you will them it useful.

This is just the basics to get you started

Open jack goto setup and click where it says A on pic 1, from the list choose one of the options and save it, now hit the start button, from the connect menu connect input to output(C on pic 2) you should get sound from your guitar if not repeat the above steps and select something else from that A list.
Also if your computer is freezing or the sound is stuttering or ardour won't start(when running jackctl) make sure realtime(B on pic 1) is not selected.

For ardour you'll need something like this(pic 3) and this works for anything else that you plug in so instead of yoshimi you'll use rakarrak. it's just a case of linking whats on the left to whats on the right.
To get ardour recording(pic 4) add a new track(right click on D) and activate it (E) if the levels are not registering(H) check your jack connections. Once your ready to record hit F and G.
