Trying to install movie player for ubuntu 10.04 not working

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed been playing around with it for a week or maybe two. A little familiar with the command line tried to install movie player or install what was missing and I have had no success. I'm a new linux user got turned on threw school trying to get rid of my windows crutch but little things like installing missing plug ins are getting me a little frustrated. Still a newbie with Linux but want to learn what may help me out or what websites would anyone point me to? I do appreciate any help I can get thank you for your time to whoever may read this!

Try this tutorial, start at page 2, about halfway down: 5 Configure Additional Repositories. It's for ubuntu 9.10, but should work fine for 10.04. Post back with any problems. Good luck!

Well Totem automatically comes with it. This is the movie player. Just go to Synaptic Package Manager and look up totem. You should find the repositories for it. Just install all of them and you should be set to go. Again, you do NOT need to install another video player as Totem Movie Player automatically comes with it.

I recommended the tutorial mainly for a place to find the codecs and plugins necessary to watch most video.

Totem does come with Ubuntu, but still won't play alot of files without the codecs from the restricted repository.

Synaptic Package Manager - Community Ubuntu Documentation - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

RestrictedFormats - Community Ubuntu Documentation
Quote:

Synaptic

Go to Applications → Add/Remove...

Set Show: to All available applications

Search for ubuntu-restricted-extras and install it. Note that there is also xubuntu-restricted-extras (for Xubuntu) and kubuntu-restricted-extras (for Kubuntu.)

Or open the Terminal, and execute the following command:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
The Ubuntu Documentation site covers pretty much anything you need to know.
