Trying to Install MDK 10 Community onto MS Virtual PC

I, like a lot of others want to try out Linux (MDK 10). So I thought instead of dual booting with XP, I would use MS Virtual PC and see what it could do etc.

Everything seemed to load normally (3 Cd's), apart from a couple of problems such as detecting no sound and graphics. On reboot, I end up typing in my username and password then the next line stumps me:

[steve@localhost steve]

What do I need to type in next?

As I was not going to do much with it I didn't add a root password, but I did add myself as a user with a password.

Any help for this oap would be appreciated.

Try to start Xserver.
Type 'startx' and if your installation worked correctly, a desktop environment should start.

Afraid all I get is the following:

execve failed for /etc/x11/x (errno 2)
giving up.
Xinit : No such file or directory (errno 2) unable to connect to X server
Xinit : No such process (errno 3): Server error
[steve@localhost steve]$_

One thing I did notice on bootup was this line:
Beginning Interface eth1 Failed

You definitely need a root passwd, buddy. It looks like X either wasn't installed or isn't set up properly. Since the mdk installation takes about fifteen minutes, maybe you could just re-install the whole thing.

eth1 is the ethernet networking interface. Don't worry about that for now.

I have reinstalled it 3x with the same result.
The 2nd + 3rd time with a root password.

Could it be that I am installing via a virtual drive be the problem?

As for installing, its taking approx 1hr 45mins to innstall the 3 disks, is this normal?

Sounds like the same problem that I had with a clean install the other day.

I could not set up graphics under Man 10 install, so I could only log in as you did but still could not set up graphics. It was caused by Man 10 & 9.2 not liking the Elsa graphics card, although it is in the list of cards, being a novice the only way round it I found was to swop the card for an ATI one that worked fine.
