Are you having trouble with:
1. Downloading?
2. Burning the iso too a CD?
3. Running the Demo?
4. Doing the WUBI install as a Windows Application?

You need to be a little more explicit in order to give thes folks something to work with.

Is ubuntu required in your studies or would any linux distro be usable?

Sounds like you have network issues (speed?). So I would go for a smaller download. Puppy linux or Damn Small Linux.
