Trying to install damn small linux help!

hello,
I am trying to install damn small linux onto a hard drive from a USB device. I write the partition as a primary linux partition and then i start the dsl-hdinstall and it goes up to the linux boot loader then when i do lilo (or grub i think... both fail) i get this error:::

fatal: bios device code 0x80 is being used by two disks /hdev/hdc and /dev/sda

Do you guys know what this means and how i can fix this... cause i'm trying to install onto the hard drive so i don't have ot boot from the usb device everytime.

Do you have any other operating systems on your computer. If there is will they boot? If you have a live cd it would help if you could give us fdisk -l.

I have no other OS's on the drive... i'm doing a clean install (wiping everything on the drive when i install linux). Fdisk -l shows

------------
Disk /dev/sda: 4060MB, 5060086272 byes
64 heads, 32 sectors/track, 3872 cylinders
units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 = 1048576 bytes

device boot start end blocks id system
/dev/sda1 * 1 50 51184 6 FAT16
/dev/sda2 51 3872 3913728 b win95 FAT32

Disk /dev/hdc: 6448MB, 6448619520bytes
15 heads, 63 sectors/tracks, 13328 cylinders
units = cylinders of 945 * 512 = 483840 bytes

device boot start end blocks id system
/dev/hdc1 * 1 13328 6297448+ 83 Linux

the sda is the usb flash drive that has Damn small linux on it and i'm trying to install it to hdc1. which is a 6gb hard drive (i'm installing it on this hard drive for testing so i don't have problems when i try to install it on my bigger hard drive).

It will save you time by installing from cd, you are copying your boot record and it still thinks it is on the old drive number. Did you boot your usb from bios or by boot loader?

I booted from bios. That's what i thought the problem was, but this is a very old thin client machine and it does not actually have a cd-rom so that's why i was trying this... i might hook it up to my mom's cd-rom and install it quick then hope it works, probably tonight. Either tonight or tomorow.

Hey,
i hooked up a cd-rom to it and installed form that, and it worked fine. The problem must have been what you said where it was conused about where to put the boot loader etc. I'm glad i now know what the problem was, even though i think i'm going to sell this project for a PSP to get crisis core, becuase i feel like this project is going to take up to much of my time and there are other thigns i need to do before this project (like a job) and i'm bad at time management. Haha. If anyone here is interested in a small thin client server or 500GB hard drive through me a PM. the thin client is 50$ and the 500GB HD is 85$.

Thanks for your help too btw, it was such a frustrating problem. Any way to get around the problem as well? So that you can install from a USB Drive?
