Rpm? Tarball? Better info in questions=better and more specific answers.

Some links, then.

LNAG - How do I install a program I downloaded from the Internet?
Rute Guide's software explanation

tar.gz

The whole name is: xpde-0.3.5-nolibs-20030426.tar.gz

It's the XPde enviroment... www.xpde.com

I could not find any directions on RH9 at the site itself...

Put it in some directory, cd there and extract the files from the gz tarball.

tar -xvzf xpde-0.3.5-nolibs-20030426.tar.gz

Now, read the README and INSTALL directions and follow those directions, just as explained in the LNAG How do I install a program I downloaded from the Internet? section.

You didn't install the developemntal packages if it can't find gcc when you attempt to compile it.
